“Mark Daniels gets into the swing of being Michael Bublé at the Queen’s Theatre, Barnstaple. Ellen Cook was there. Playing to a home crowd can be a daunting prospect, as seeing so many familiar faces can potentially put you off your stride. But North Devon’s Mark Daniels, fronting the Ultimate Bublé tribute show, had the Queen’s Theatre audience eating out of his hand. Michael Bublé has established a stratospherically successful career on smooth swing sounds, charm and charisma. So it was no wonder that the auditorium was packed with fans eager to see if Mark was any match for Michael. And they weren’t disappointed. Vocally, Mark displayed a power and range that was captivating and confident. His voice conveyed the emotional value of tunes such as Cry Me A River and Home perfectly, and clearly enjoyed the more upbeat offerings including Haven’t Met You Yet and It’s A Beautiful Day. Throw in some Moondance and a touch of Fever, and there’s not much this man can’t sing. Never was this more apparent than when he stepped away from the mic at one point and simply sang out into the crowd. Such admirable singing talent was supported by a highly-accomplished group of musicians at the command of musical director Kennedy Aitchison, who has toured with Susan Boyle and Riverdance among others. In between songs, Mark chatted away happily to the audience, making references to his past career with North Devon Theatres, urging to people to dance if the mood took them, and enjoying a bit of banter. Mark: “Be honest now, who’s been dragged here by their other half?” “Me,” pipes up a lone voice from the stalls. Cue much giggling from the stage and auditorium. Clapping, dancing, whooping and hollering were the order of the evening pretty much every time the band started up. Indeed, the appreciation emanating from the crowd was a delightfully touching sight for this reviewer to behold. Mark was visibly moved by it as the concert drew to a close with a richly-deserved encore and standing ovation.”
