Hello everyone,
As I reflect on this significant milestone, I wanted to take a moment to share something deeply personal with you all. Many of you will already know, while for others, this might be new information.
Five years ago, on January 14, 2020, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. It was an incredibly difficult and challenging time, but with the support of the amazing people around me, I found the strength to face it head-on.
Just ten days after my diagnosis, on January 24, I underwent surgery.
Today, I am thrilled to announce that I have received the all-clear — five years cancer-free!
This milestone is a testament not only to the power of early detection but also to the incredible expertise of the NHS, my talented surgeon Mr. Cartmell and his exceptional theatre team, including my dear friends Ali and Rob, and the countless staff at NDDH who have shown such care and compaction for me over the past 5 years.
To everyone who has been there, sent well wishes, or simply kept me in their thoughts — thank you! Your support carried me through the darkest days and gave me strength when I needed it most.
I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Fern Centre. Their support has been a lifeline, providing mental health support, men’s groups, and holistic treatments during my recovery and beyond.
They are based in the grounds of North Devon District Hospital and offer a safe haven for cancer patients in North Devon, bridging the gap in care and promoting well-being during challenging times. You can learn more about their incredible charity work here.
As I reflect on this journey, I want to share just a small piece of advice: please, never ignore any health concerns you might have. In my case, it was quick action and persistence with medical professionals, that ultimately lead to my life being saved.
Early action can make all the difference. Listen to your body, seek medical advice, and take care of your health.
Here's to life, love, and the incredible people who make it all worthwhile. If this message resonates with you, please share it to help spread awareness.
Thank you all, with all my heart.
Mark
